Anyone familiar with fiber laser cutting machines knows they have a wide range of applications and deliver excellent cutting results. However, not all materials are suitable for fiber laser cutting. Some materials can cause significant damage to the machine, making them unsuitable for cutting.
Although fiber laser cutting machines offer many advantages, they are not invincible. There are several materials that they cannot cut. So, what materials can fiber laser cutting machines handle, and which ones should be avoided?
Fiber laser cutting machines are ideal for metal cutting but cannot process materials like non-metals, MDF, and high-reflectivity metals such as copper. Non-metals do not absorb fiber laser wavelengths effectively, MDF may burn due to heat processing, and reflective metals can damage machine components.
1. Fiber Laser Cutting Machines Are Primarily for Metal Cutting
Fiber laser cutting machines fall under the category of metal cutting machines. Their laser wavelength is optimized for metal absorption, making them highly efficient for cutting metals. However, certain non-metallic materials do not absorb fiber laser wavelengths effectively, making them unsuitable for cutting with this technology.
2. Fiber Laser Cutting Machines Cannot Cut MDF and Similar Materials
Fiber laser cutting is a heat-based process, and cutting MDF (medium-density fiberboard) can cause burning, resulting in charred and uneven edges that fail to meet cutting requirements. This includes materials like fiberboard, wood fibers, plant-based fibers, and engineered boards made with adhesives like urea-formaldehyde resin. These materials are currently unsuitable for fiber laser processing.
3. Caution When Cutting Highly Reflective Materials
Metals like copper and other highly reflective materials pose challenges for fiber laser cutting machines. While they can technically be cut, these materials reflect a significant portion of the laser energy, which can damage the protective lenses inside the machine. Special precautions are necessary when working with such materials to prevent equipment damage.
